How to be a better husband

So you want to be a better husband? The fact that you're reading this is a great start. It means you care enough about your marriage to improve it. Not to say it's a bad marriage, but everyone can improve somewhere!

The information I provide below are just some general tips, but you must know your wife well enough to know what will work and what won't.

Listen!

One of the most common issues in a marriage is that the wife does not feel like she is listened to, or that she feels that she cannot speak with her husband. This is honestly very easily rectified with some simple steps:

1.) You can set aside time meant for the two of you to talk specifically. Turn off phones, TVs, and computers. You can even go above and beyond and make it so that it happens at a park, on a walk, or even over a dinner that you cook.

2.) You can call her on your idle time. Do you get breaks at work? Or do you have a car ride before or after work that will offer up some talk time?

3.) Wake up earlier and have a nice breakfast each morning, or watch the sunrise.

4.) You can take your wife on as your new fishing partner, or your buddy that you watch sports with.

How can a marriage maintain any kind of intimacy or connection if you're not willing to express how you're feeling? This again goes back to talking and listening. But it's important that she knows and understands what's going through your head as well.

Tell!

Every woman wants to feel beautiful. You can't possibly tell me that the woman you married isn't beautiful to you. So why don't you let her know? When she puts on a nice outfit and you think "Wow, that's a nice outfit!" Tell her. Did she do her hair nicely? Let her know. Women like to feel sexy, and this goes beyond the simple butt pat! Do you like the way she looks when she walks into the room in those high heels, or that tight skirt? Let her know these things because while thinking it is a nice idea, women’s' mind reader buttons are often broken.

Notes!

Women love getting little notes. Even something as simple as jotting your thoughts down or a simple "I Love You" and sticking it to the fridge will probably give her a smile. Putting it into a lunch bag is a good idea too. The other day I bought my wife a thank you card and just wrote in it about how I appreciated all of the things that she does. I sealed it in the envelope and put it in with the groceries that I brought up. What did she do? She smiled, we hugged and now it's on our refrigerator. That simple gesture took only a couple of minutes and a few dollars but it meant a lot to her.

While women may seem like an impossible puzzle to figure out, and I agree, there are still a few simple things that can really take the ordinary minutes and make them special.
